BUY MY COMIC!
Hey! £1 Will buy a PDF copy of ‘Previously’ a collection of my small press comics, written by a variety of comic book writers! LINK>>>
I’m sorry, I’m not in any position to be able to offer any help with this – if the following doesn’t work, you’re on your own! (Though, I’ve had lots of emails from people saying it does work…)
All details taken from here (Steve Leibers Blog) works for me though (OSX 10.4.5)
Grab all files from here:
http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/
Install in the following order:
* libusb.pkg
* sane-backends.pkg
* twain-sane-interface.pkg
* sane-preference-pane.pkg
This installs the sane twain backend, now grab the mustek driver from here: http://www.meier-geinitz.de/sane/gt68xx-backend/
> Go into system preferences, click on the SANE icon
> Find the gt68xx line.
> Click the configure button.
>A terminal window will open.
>Scroll to find the part that says this:
>
>\#Autodetect Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB
>usb 0x055f 0×0210
>
>\# Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB doesn’t need any manual settings
>
>Delete the “#”‘s and click okay. You’ll probably have to enter your system password.
> Then Find the gt68xx line in your SANE window again and click the firmware button. This will open up another terminal window. Drag that “a32fw.usb ” file off your desktop into the terminal window, and save it.
> Shut down.
> Plug your mustek’s USB cord into your computer.
> Turn it on.
> Go into photoshop.
> Open IMPORT from the FILE menu and hit SANE.

And, finally, to quote Steve in his post on the subject:
> I should note that I’m not able to offer you tech support. I can barely solve my own problems, much less yours. If what I’ve written here doesn’t work for you, I’m sorry, but I can’t help you.
I see Steve’s blog has moved and the page is no longer available, oh well.
Is this cos the Mustek doesn’t have OSX drivers?
This worked like a charm for me!!!!! Thank you so much!
Worked for me. The only problem was downloading the a32fw.usb file. The problem is when Safari downloads this, it saves it as a32fw.usb.txt. If you upload this into the control panel, it does not work. To remove, go to /usr/local/share/sane/gt68xx.
Either rename the file to a32fw.usb and it works fine. There are a few corrupt lines in the scans but as I am just scanning floor plans, i don’t really care. A good solution.
Would any of you guys be willing to help me out installing this on my computer? Please?
I have no clue how to use unix or install packages..
usagiATusagis-house.net
Thanks!
Hi guys, I finally got this to work. One clue is make sure that in Stuffit, make sure this option is checked off in your prefs:
“Continue to expand if possible”
You can just double-click and the pkgs are self-executable then.
Followed the directions, make sure and install the binaries not the sdk’s. and make sure not to use safari to download the mustek driver (a32fw.usb), because safari converts it to a .txt file, and i had to plug in the ac adapter since the usb did not supply enough power, and after all that it worked perfect. maybe not the best scans ever, but definitely the cheapest a3 scans by far.
Awsome 5 minutes work just saved me a couple of hundred bucks thank you so much
Aika monivaiheinen homma, mutta lopputulos on näillä ohjeilla toimiva versiossa 10.4.8. It really works, thank you!
cheers for providing a solution. its a shame that the only affordable A3 scanner on the market is apparently a box of bits that doesn’t support OSX; i just hope the scans aren’t too glitchy.
Extremely helpful. Thanks so much.
I’m missing something here.
I installed the backend packages and downloaded the driver at
http://www.meier-geinitz.de/sane/gt68xx-backend/
Where do I put the driver? The download contained no package only a folder called
gt68xx-backend-only-1.0-82
The SANE preferences has no driver in it to configure.
I had all this working for the last year until I reinstalled OSX onto a new HD. I have forgotten what I did to get it working the last time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much
HA HA HA!!!! IT WORKED!!!! Thanks a lot for posting this!
I wanted to thank you!! This worked! I tried to follow the directions on Steve Leibers Blog but couldn’t make heads nor tails of it. Your directions were very easy for me to follow.
Whoa! You just saved me so much horrid frustration! I love you!
hey guys i’ve done all this when i go into photoshop it says sane and everything int ehre but when i click it , it says something like it can’t locate a scanner. please please help i don’t want to send it back and i so badly want it to work, going rapidly mad

wow much thanks goes out to steve and yourself! The driver works perfectly for me and the scans are great no glitches or anything!! I’m a really happy camper!
Thanks for providing this tutorial. Got it working on 10.5.6 following the instructions provided.
Hi There I am having the same problem as Neil, sorry for being an idiot but HELP:
hey guys i’ve done all this when i go into photoshop it says sane but when i click it , no image source was found by the SANE library. Then its say there was no scanner installed? Thanks v much
Hello everyone,
Very informative and helpful information posted here.
I would like to know f anyone has come across the “white ghosted streaks” in the scans when scanning ost installation of said instructions above…or would anyone know of a MUSTK User group or forum????
Thank you.
hi everyone,
I’ve been fiddling with CS4 for ages with no joy from my mustek scanner, when in worked perfectly in CS – for anyone who had the same problem, try selecting ‘get info’ for PS, then check ‘open in Rosetta’. worked for me, though of course I can only import through photoshop.
thanks also for the clear instructions above for using SANE with this scanner, though sadly like larry, hugo and neil I’ve also had no luck on that front. anyone know what could be up? i’m pretty sure I’ve followed all the instructions to the letter so far.
A fantastic site, and brilliant effort. A great piece of work.(
Thank You – great work! Mustec 1248UB works perfect on OS X 10.5.6!
Thank you! Unfortuantely, I’m having the same problem as sonya, hugo and neil. When I go into Photoshop CS, there is NO image source from which to import; no SANE listed as they said.
That’s four people with the same issue. Can’t anyone offer some help? Bueller?
Thanks in advance,
Mike
I have followed the instructions, and pretty much got there, although I really haven’t a clue what I’m doing… I do not have photoshop, well I do, but only the free one and there is no import option on that. But was directed to this page from finding an article where someone had followed this and then managed to open it in image capture. When I open image capture, SANE is there, as the scanner, but it says that SANE is being used by another application – it isn’t? that I know of! all other applications have been closed. I have tried shutting down the computer a few times and it is still saying the same thing.
(Mac OS X 10.4.11) Would be grateful for any help you can offer.
I have found another option on this website:
1.- http://www.mustek.de/eng_/start_english.htm
2.- Click on “drivers” and then go to the first option and select your scanner-series (in my case is scanexpress series) and click “go”.
3.- Choose your scanner port : USB and then select your scanner from the list (mine is A3 USB 600Pro) and you’ll see a download option for MAC Driver 10.4~10.5
4.- Install the driver and open the Image Capture and find the TWAIN scanner.
5.- I’m using Photoshop CS3 and choosing File/import/Scanexpress USB 600 Pro..

I’ve tried the steps but if I do a scan, all I get is black with a few white streaks.
A few hours ago the scanner was working just fine on my XP pc but I forgot to scan a picture I drew. XP detects it but Photoshop tells me it can’t find the connect nor twain.
I’m about ready to toss the stupid thing out the window.
i’m have a problem. when instalicion program in my computer , program with .exe. do not calkutate. haw do do?
i just got one of these scanners. I think it might be broken. CAn someone tell me.. should it make sound or light up even a little when it’s first plugged in? Mine just sits there like a dead weight. I’m trying to figure if its a hardware or software issue..
anyone?
Works with Mustek 1248UB and 10.5.8! Thank you!
